A Widow’s Trust
Now she who is really a widow, and left alone, trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day. But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives. And these things command, that they may be blameless.
1 Timothy 5:5-7
Paul described to Timothy the duty and usefulness of widows who have placed their trust fully in God. Sadly, a widow was all alone, without her husband by her side, but there were things she could still do. Historically, in those days, a widow would spend much of her time in prayer––giving supplications, day and night. Intercessory prayer placed a widow on a spiritual battlefront. It was an important placement, not to be taken lightly. Prayer was a necessity, and given time, she would develop a very fruitful prayer ministry.
The Lord watches over widows; they are close to His heart. Think of the widow who gave two mites. Did not Jesus notice her sacrifice? She gave all she had (Luke 21:1-4). Thank God for godly widows who are on their knees praying for our church! They have left us a good example of how to follow Jesus Christ––they start well and finish well.
Then on the opposite side, you had other widows who were not really godly; they were ungodly. For as long as this widow lived, she enjoyed a life of pleasure-seeking––indulging herself in this world’s pleasures. Although she was still physically living, she was, in actuality, dead in her sin, as stated in Romans 3:23: For the wages of sin is death....
If you are a widow today, do not live a wasteful life of frivolity and pleasure-seeking, place your trust fully in God. Live your life as a godly woman. God still has a plan for your life. Be a part of the body of Christ by engaging yourself in spiritual warfare as a prayer warrior. Imagine, you will have the privilege of seeing firsthand how God moves in the lives of others.
Prayer is the breath, the watchword, the comfort, the strength, the honor of a Christian.
