Guarding the Name of God
Let as many bondservants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and His doctrine may not be blasphemed. And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brethren, but rather serve them because those who are benefited are believers and beloved. Teach and exhort these things.
1 Timothy 6:1-2
In his letter, Paul turned the conversation to addressing issues between employers and employees. In this period of history, there were masters who owned slaves. No matter if they were a slave or a master, there was to be a good testimony in the way they interacted with each other. Why? So that no blasphemous words would be spoken to dishonor the name of God and His holy Word.
What does this mean for us in today’s society? As a Christian employee, have a good work ethic and consider all that you do should be done as unto the Lord. Give Him honor as you faithfully do your work. Have an attitude that your time is God's time so that you are not slothful in your work. As a Christian employee, you should be more productive than anybody else. You should have a higher standard.
Have integrity in the workplace and set a good example. Do not take extra breaks, witness about your faith during work time, or take advantage of your employer’s kindness, especially if you have a Christian employer. As an employee, respect your employer and give them your best work.
The Bible is clear. As an employer, you are to be fair when paying wages to your employees. Also treat them with respect and courtesy. Look out for their best interests. There is a beautiful example of this in Ruth 2, where Boaz the employer and his employees––the reapers––addressed each other: Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you!” And they answered him, “The LORD bless you!” As you treat each other like this, everyone will be blessed and God’s name exalted.
Make your thoughts a sanctuary God can inhabit, and don’t let any of the rest of your life dishonor God.
