Labor Day

Then to Adam He [God] said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; cursed is the ground because of you; with hard labor you shall eat from it all the days of your life.”
Genesis 3:17 NASB

Since the beginning of time in the Garden of Eden, the Bible reveals the consequences of what is commonly known as the Fall of Mankind. The seduction of the serpent caused our parents, Adam and Eve, to sin. The ground became cursed, and since then, work has become a terrible toil. Men sweat and endure hard labor to make a living to provide for their homes and families.

Labor Day is a federal holiday that is observed on the first Monday in September. It is a time of tribute to the many achievements of American workers and is often celebrated with city parades. Families generally get together and have barbeques and relax.

The first Labor Day in history was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in agreement with the proposals of the Central Labor Union. Later, other states followed suit. Finally, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September of each year a national holiday.

Labor Day has been considered to be the unofficial end of summer. Nowadays, schools have already started, and the calendar is in full swing with school activities. Most people have already taken their summer vacations and have gone back to their work routine. The weather in the mornings and evenings will grow cooler, and people’s thoughts lean toward other holidays, such as Thanksgiving and even Christmas!

The yearly calendar moves very fast, so take time to enjoy this year’s Labor Day. Relax and put your feet up. Take time to rest from all your hard labor and be blessed by all God has given you––your family and home.

Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil— this is a gift of God. ~Ecclesiastes 5:19 NIV~
