God’s Peace
The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
Philippians 4:9
As the Philippians put Paul’s teachings into practice and followed the example he had set, the Apostle knew that the peace of God would be with them. He desired they experience God’s peace.
Do you have the peace of God? You must know the grace of God before you can experience the peace of God. In Paul’s greetings to churches, he often stated: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 1:7). Grace always comes before peace.
Obedience to God’s Word can bring about God’s peace in your life: Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble (Psalm 119:165). Job, a man greatly tested by God, said: “Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you” (Job 22:21 NLT). Are things going well in your life? If you are suffering the consequences of a life of disobedience, get back to where you need to be––submit to God and obey His Word.
Trials will still come, times may still be difficult, but you will have the peace of God that passes all understanding: ...you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7 NLT).
God’s presence is a comforting peace. He knows those who need His comforting presence: The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit (Psalm 34:18). One of the renderings for Philippians 4:5 CEB is the Lord is near. The nearness of His presence becomes the secret to rejoicing. Again, His presence will bring you much needed peace.
What is your situation? Do you need God’s peace through receiving His grace through salvation? Do you need to repent of your backslidings and find a renewed peace through submission to God and obedience to His Word? Are you broken and in need of His comforting presence?
Peace comes not from the absence of trouble, but from the presence of God.
