The Working of God’s Glorious Power
...strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.
Colossians 1:11-12
Christians are strengthened with all might by the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in them. In context, the word strengthened literally speaks of how God, through the Holy Spirit, will give believers the power to live with a controlled, patient temperament. They are enabled to remain calm, in circumstances, and they do not get easily angered with people.
In every area of a believer’s life, they are to demonstrate patience and longsuffering. Again, where does this power to be patient and longsuffering with a joyful attitude come from? It is given by God according to the glorious power of the Holy Spirit! The only way the Holy Spirit can really operate in a believer’s life is when they are totally submitted to Jesus Christ. Then God can work in them and through them.
I believe there are too many Christians who lack joy. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit––along with love, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Through the power of the Holy Spirit, all of His spiritual fruits will be evident in believers’ lives. Remember, the fruit of joy comes from within a person; it is not the same as happiness that can come and go with outward circumstances. No matter what happens in life, nothing can steal away a Christian’s joy.
We have the joy of our salvation––an eternal inheritance. Heaven awaits us! How were we qualified to be partakers of this inheritance? It is not man’s work––it is God’s work. We could not qualify ourselves. There is no possible way! Jesus Christ is the One who has redeemed and saved us.
We believe, that the work of regeneration, conversion, sanctification and faith, is not an act of man’s free will and power, but of the mighty, efficacious and irresistible grace of God.
