Understanding God’s Will

Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.
Ephesians 5:17

Considering all that we have learned about God’s wisdom in yesterday’s devotional, we are then encouraged to understand God’s will. Do you understand the will of God? It is very easy to know it. The best way to know the will of God is to study the Word of God. Think on what these Scriptures instruct us to do:

Psalm 143:10: Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.
Micah 6:8: He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?
Romans 12:2: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

The Palmist asked in prayer to be taught to do God’s will. By His Spirit he would be led to live his life in uprightness. The prophet Micah shows to us God’s revealed will for man––to do what is good and to live a just life by showing His mercy to others. We are to walk in humility before God.

Then Paul exhorts us to not follow the world’s ways, but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. How is that accomplished? It is by reading God’s Word. We find In the Scriptures the revealed will of God––His acceptable and perfect will––so simple.

Finally, Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the LORD, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass (Psalm 37:4-5). Know that as you place God first in your life, He will place His desires in your heart. Everything will align with God’s perfect will.

When your will is God’s will, you will have your will.
~C.H. Spurgeon~
