Saying Yes to God

“Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
Luke 1:36-38

The angel Gabriel encouraged Mary. He revealed how God was already at work. The Lord had miraculously given her relative Elizabeth a child in her old age. During the time Elizabeth was childless, Mary would have known her great sorrow, but God did what was humanly impossible for her. Now He was about to do what was even more impossible in Mary’s life.

Zacharias and Elizabeth prayed for a child. God answered their prayer according to His perfect will, and in His precise time. There will be occasions in our lives when we will wait on God to answer our prayers. God will do impossible things, but it is according to His perfect will and timing. The Scriptures tell us: Now to Him [God] who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us... (Ephesians 3:20).

After hearing about Elizabeth’s pregnancy, Mary’s heart was encouraged and moved by faith. I am sure that knowing a near relative was going to have a child by God’s divine intervention helped give her courage. She willingly agreed to be used by the Lord to become the mother of Jesus. She fully submitted to His plan. Mary said, “Yes” to God––“Let it be to me according to your word.”

In Psalm 40:8, David prophetically expressed the heart of Christ in doing the perfect will of God: “I delight to do Your will, O my God....” Jesus said, “Yes,” to the Father: “Then I said, ‘Look, I have come to do your will, O God—as is written about me in the Scriptures’ ” (Hebrews 10:7 NLT).

Knowing these two responses, what is your response to the revealed will of God for your life? Will you say, “Yes?”

Let the devout reader adore the Savior for the spontaneous and hearty manner in which he undertook the great work of our salvation.
