Pop culture makes much of angels, but who are they? To serve believers, God provides an unseen army of powerful beings who do much more than decorate Christmas trees.

The peace on earth spoken of in the Christmas story will not come to pass until Jesus sets up his kingdom on earth. He will deliver the whole world from the scourge of war. But when He first came to live among us, few understood that.

The people of Jesus’ day were ruled by the Roman Empire. Many believed that Jesus would fulfill the prophecies to deliver them from that rule. But Jesus had a far greater deliverance to carry out, a deliverance from the power of sin.

In a Nazareth synagogue, Jesus opened a scroll of Isaiah the prophet.  He began to read of good news for the poor, freedom for prisoners, sight for the blind, and liberty for the oppressed, and ended by saying, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your ears.” Only the Son of God could say that.

The baby Jesus will be a baby no longer when a thousand-year reign of peace dispels the darkness of war and suffering. Let’s allow Isaiah the prophet to lift our spirits by reminding us of the future reign of Christ the King on this earth.

In ancient times, kings had almost absolute power. A person’s life or death rested in the hands of the king. Though we live in a different kind of world now, we look forward to a time of a true King ruling the whole earth.
December 4, 2014
Typically, kings have a total claim on people’s lives, time, and taxes. In the modern U.S. we are not familiar with this type of government. Many see kings as relics of a bygone era. But today we will see why Christ is the long foretold King of Kings, and what that title means.
