The Boss of Me

July 12, 2023

The Bible talks a lot about submission to authority in marriage, child and parent relationships, and elsewhere in life. Ultimately, though, the authority that we must submit to is God because He knows what’s best for us and will direct us in that way.

The Apostle Paul’s letters (among other writers in the New Testament) are certainly filled with encouragement and joy for every Believer. But at the same time, they are full of instruction and caution to look out for false doctrine and false teachers designed to ‘scratch’ the listener’s ear. It may sound good, until it isn’t.

The Bible describes Christ as a shepherd and His followers as His sheep. Even though He promises to always come after His sheep that stray, it is better to listen to His voice and obey Him from the beginning. Our life on earth is short and so we need not waste it in disobedience.

Due to the number of different world religions there are, people tend to say that there are many ways to get to God. The Bible tells us that the only way to get to God and have eternal life is through believing in His only Son, Jesus Christ.

While a lot of suffering is brought on by ourselves, God can allow suffering to come for the purpose of growing and strengthening us. He has promised to meet all of our needs, and He has always been faithful to that promise. We must respond to Him by giving Him our all, in suffering or not, and live the abundant life that comes only by obedience to Him.

The Bible tells us that we are lights in a very dark world. Rather than hiding our light we need to go out into the world and contaminate others in a good way with the light that leads them to God. An indicator that we are following Christ in His light is that we have fellowship with other believers.

We can choose to do things our own way and worry about the burdens we carry that weigh us down and exhaust us, or we can do things God’s way. When God works through us rather than us work by ourselves the burden is lifted from our shoulders and we have rest.

Sometimes the best way we can fight in spiritual battles for ourselves or others is by simply standing against the enemy. Prayer is a key component to winning as it keeps our focus on God and what He is doing in and around us on the battlegrounds.

It’s all too easy to break the law, especially when it comes to speeding or paying taxes. Whether we agree with the law or not, or whether we like who is in office or not, the Bible tells us that God placed those specific authorities over us and we must obey them. In the same way that we obey God when we obey the law, we also disobey Him when we break the law.

God gave us the law through Moses to show us that we are incapable of following it completely without Him. That is why He sent Jesus to open our eyes and see His light that shines all around us and can shine in and through us if we let Him.

We tend to give all of our energy and time to everything else except what matters most which is our relationship with God. The Bible tells us that you cannot serve two masters so instead of serving everything else, serve God first and everything else will fall into place. True eternal success is when God says, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
