Sofia was working as a restaurant cook when Covid hit.  She called her workplace to say she wasn't coming in because she didn't feel well. They knew it could be Covid, but tests weren't widely available then, so the restaurant closed out of caution. Sofia knew she had done the right thing by reporting her illness, but fear was running high and she worried about the stigma she might face.

Think about it. Aren't you more enthusiastic about something you feel you have a choice in, than about an idea someone tells you that you must accept? If we want to be faithful to impress Biblical wisdom on our children, we need to find a way to do that while respecting them as persons made in God's image. The Bible talks about impressing the truths of scripture on our children.  The truth is that values are caught, not taught.

It's one thing to say that we're spiritual, meaning that we're concerned with our spirits or souls. It's another thing to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.  A Jesus follower's goal is to connect what we believe with the way we actually live.

There's much discussion today about what constitutes a genuine apology.  Is apologizing alone is good enough? Have you noticed that public apologies almost never include the words, "please forgive me?" It's usually more like, "Mistakes were made," or "I misspoke."  Can we forgive when an apology is inadequate?

A young wife buries her face in her pillow after an evening of abuse; hot, silent tears soak her pillowcase. Her elderly neighbor has been to the nursing home that day to visit his wife.  She doesn't recognize him, and the tears flow as he sits alone in front of a blaring TV. Then, just before midnight, a phone call wakes the mom and dad at the end of the street.  There's been an accident and their young adult won't ever be coming home again; their tears are anguished.

Even when we have assurance of eternal life, it's natural to be apprehensive about the unknown. We may fear a painful death or wonder about the mechanics of life beyond this earth. In Psalm 23, the writer says, "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me" (Psalm 23:4). The focus is on God's presence in that valley, but we may still shudder at the description. You can almost feel the chill of the shadows. But shadows are only images of a thing, not the thing itself.

What was the very first thing you did this morning? Did you reach for your phone and scroll away?  And what about last night?  Was the temptation to binge-watch strong, so you ended up consuming mindless media until your eyes dropped closed?

You could call it the ultimate experiment in social distancing.  In 1934, Admiral Richard Byrd spent five months alone in a one room shack in Antarctica, buried under snow, at the world's end.  In his memoir, titled, Alone, Byrd wrote, "The human race… is not alone in the universe. Though I am cut off from human beings, I am not alone."

When you were a teenager, were you a super-fan of a pop star, or was there an athlete that you idolized? As an adult, maybe there's a podcast host or a writer you look up to and would be awed to meet. Following Jesus is similar! How can we study and emulate every move He would make, so that we can be closer to Him, more like Him—so that we'd be recognized as a super fan of Jesus Christ?

They had the house.  They had the wine cellar.  They had the business, the cars, the jewelry, the vacations.  All night long, the talk around the dinner party table centered on pleasure.
