Even when we have assurance of eternal life, it's natural to be apprehensive about the unknown. We may fear a painful death or wonder about the mechanics of life beyond this earth. In Psalm 23, the writer says, "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me" (Psalm 23:4). The focus is on God's presence in that valley, but we may still shudder at the description. You can almost feel the chill of the shadows. But shadows are only images of a thing, not the thing itself.

You could call it the ultimate experiment in social distancing.  In 1934, Admiral Richard Byrd spent five months alone in a one room shack in Antarctica, buried under snow, at the world's end.  In his memoir, titled, Alone, Byrd wrote, "The human race… is not alone in the universe. Though I am cut off from human beings, I am not alone."

Did you know that some of the earliest written documents were marriage covenants? Since very early in human history, people have recognized that unless something is publicly recorded and witnessed, we tend to forget terms of agreements. Yet a marriage covenant goes beyond recording terms of an agreement.

There's an old word used to describe commitment, like the commitment in a marriage, and it's this:  covenant.  A covenant is weightier than a simple agreement, and one characteristic of a covenant is that two previously separate people become a single team through their agreement. Covenants are sacred in the Bible, but not everyone who enters into an agreement makes a covenant.

Love isn't like your favorite chocolate cake that can only be divided into a finite number of pieces. For example, when you have a second child, you get to experience your love multiply instead of being divided. You don't love your first child any less, you simply have new love to give to your the second child.

A lot of different of people in the Bible admitted their sins, but a man named David was unique in saying, "I have sinned greatly." Was David that much worse than others?  Not necessarily.  But David's sins and his repentance can give us insight into the importance of the process of forgiveness.

Back in the days of the Roman empire, a condemned person was stripped of all rights and privileges. Their future was devoid of hope, as if they were the living dead. Paul, a follower of Jesus who wrote much of the New Testament, referenced that scenario when he explained that there is no condemnation for people who surrender their lives to Jesus Christ (Romans 8:1). When it comes to hopelessness and death, we are free! Our pasts fall away, and we are given a renewed future.
