How you can truly experience God

Search me, O God, and know my heart!
            Try me and know my thoughts!
And see if there be any grievous way in me,
            and lead me in the way everlasting!

Psalm 139:23-24          

Socrates once said that the unexamined life is not worth living. But unfortunately, many Christians go day after day and never seriously examine their lives before God. But not King David, who wrote in today’s passage, “Search me, O God…”

The Hebrew word for search here means to dig down deep and mine the rich resources of a mine. And when we ask God to search us, it enables God to dig deep into our lives, remove those things that are wrong. and bring out those things which are right.

And not only did David pray, “Search me,” but he also prayed, “Try me…” Now, this word was used in the context of a metallurgist who would take impure metal and remove the impurities. David is asking God to test him and remove anything that is impure in order to be stronger when the testing is over.

David knew God in a personal way because He was open to God doing a great work in his life. In the same way, you can know God by opening yourself to Him. Pray He’d search you and test you, so that you’d be conformed to His image and be led in the everlasting way!
