Is faith without sight really plausible?

March 14, 2013

Then (Jesus) said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

John 20:27-29

In the 1700s, a man named David Hume pioneered the idea of empiricism. This idea essentially says that everything we need to know about the universe can be observed. Empiricism has become a kind of religion among many in the scientific community today. So firm do many hold it that they say nothing is really certain until we actually observe it.

But here’s the problem with that: Truth exists apart from observation. The North Pole existed 500 years ago regardless of the fact that no one had been there. Ultraviolet light was around well before we had the technology to identify it. And distant galaxies spun long before the telescope was invented.

Infinite realities exist today that are outside the reach of our observation. We know this to be true. Yet all too often, Christians are labeled as crazy for making assertions about the spiritual world, God, and heaven.

Faith is not just closing your eyes and imagining things that down deep in your heart you don’t really think are true. Faith is the evidence of the things not yet revealed. So hold tightly to the hope that one day, your faith will be sight as you stand before Christ in eternity. What a glorious day!

STAY STRONG IN YOUR FAITH, KNOWING THAT ONE DAY, THAT WHICH YOU CAN’T SEE TODAY WILL BE REVEALED IN POWER AND GLORY!
