What should be your first priority?

February 19, 2013

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?”

Matthew 16:24-26

I read an article several years ago about a young soldier who perished in the first Gulf War. I remember as those young men and women were being sent off, there were many here in America who were protesting, “No war for oil!”

But this young soldier, just days before his death, wrote a letter to his parents back home and said, “I know some people say we shouldn’t be here for oil. But that’s not why I’m here. I’m here to fight for the little kids who are being abused and gassed at the hands of a mad dictator.” Two days later, that young soldier gave his life for the cause he held so dear.

I wonder what would happen if the people of God were as committed to the cause of Christ as this young soldier are to his cause. What if you, instead of treasuring your life and your family’s life above all else, treasured reaching the lost for Christ? What might that look like?

Believe it or not, that’s the biblical view of our lives. We’re expendable for the sake of the Gospel, and should see ourselves as so. It’s not a popular view, but it’s a correct one. So instead of putting safety and comfort first, be consumed by the desire to see the lost saved!

PUT JESUS FIRST – NOT SAFETY OR COMFORT – AND LIVE YOUR LIFE TO MAKE HIS NAME FAMOUS.
