Signs of the End Times in the Bible

Matthew 24:114

One day, Jesus’ disciples were admiring the temple of Jerusalem.

“Jesus said to them, ‘Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down’” (Matthew 24:2). Jesus was talking about the Roman invasion, which would come forty years later in AD 70.

What are the Signs of the End Times?

When Jesus said this, “As He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, ‘Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?’” (Matthew 24:3).

They were asking, “Lord, when are you going to take over?”

Antichrists and False Prophets

“And Jesus answered and said to them: ‘Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, “I am the Christ,” and will deceive many.’” (Matthew 24:4-5).

Why will they deceive so many? “For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24; read also, 1 John 4:1-3). 

The mark of a false prophet is selfinterest. A true prophet speaks of the interest of Almighty God.

Wars and Rumors of Wars 

“You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:6-7a).

The Antichrist will promise peace, but peace will not come until the Prince of Peace comes. Man has not solved the problem of war, nor will he until Jesus comes. 

Natural Disasters

“And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows” (Matthew 24:7b-8).

Other Bible translations say “the beginning of the birth pains.” Labor pains increase in two ways: in frequency, and intensity 

Persecution and Apostasy

“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake” (Matthew 24:9).

Persecution in the last days will be over the name of Jesus. They don't mind if you pray; just don't mention that name.  

“And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another” (Matthew 24:10).

Many churches are filled with “userfriendly evangelism”—no redemption by blood, no lordship of Christ, no repentance, no Hell. When persecution gets hotter, these people will desert the Church. 

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us” (1 John 2:19). 

Depravity

“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12).

The crime rate is soaring. For further information, read the news. Because sin abounds, love grows cold. We find ourselves where we cannot trust strangers.

Why does lawlessness abound? Because the false prophets say there is no absolute standard of right and wrong. The moral anchor is gone, and man goes down into a whirlpool of filth.

Preaching of the Gospel

“But he who endures to the end shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:13-14).

In the Last Days, there will be people saying, “Jesus Christ is Lord.” Christians are not saved because they endure; they endure because they are saved.

The Bible does not say that everybody will be saved, but it says the Gospel will eventually be preached in all the world. In order to do that, the people of the Church need to get deadly serious about living the Christian life.
