All around us today we see people engaging in immorality and idolatry.  False teaching is in our midst and there’s a toleration of unrepentant sin, even in the church.  What I just described was actually occurring in the church at Thyatira, as we’ll discover today on His Perfect Love.  And the Lord’s message to them is the same as it is to us today!  Join us at the tail-end of Revelation chapter two and see what that is!

Today pastor Matt VanderVen takes another look at the Lord’s letter to the church at Thyatira in Revelation chapter two.  While He commended them for a few things, He rebuked them as well.  They were tolerating false teaching and unrepentant sin, and engaging in immorality and idolatry.

As we turn back to Revelation chapter two, we’ll hear more about a culturally compromising church.  It happened in the first century, and it’s still happening today.  But the remedy is still the same. Without a doubt we need to guard our hearts against the pressure of the prevailing culture, and hold fast to the truth.

Last time we completed our look at the Lord’s letter to Smyrna, in Revelation chapter two. It was a letter of encouragement and commendation. Today, as we begin a study of the letter to Pergamum, we see a very different tone from the Lord. Pergamum had fallen into the hands of false teaching.  They were compromising. The Lord’s response? Repent!

We’re in the middle of a study of Revelation here on His Perfect Love. Today’s message from pastor Matt VanderVen is centered on the Lord’s message to the church in Smyrna, found in Revelation chapter two. Pain is never fun to experience or even talk about, but pain is inevitable. The church in Smyrna was suffering a barrage of persecution and tribulation, yet the Lord reminds them not to be fearful but rather be faithful. That’s an important point for Christians today as well.

About Matt VanderVen

Matt VanderVen is the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Harrisburg – West Shore. Matt and his wife, Lisa, moved from Rochester, NY to Harrisburg, PA in 2014 to begin a simple, line by line teaching through God’s Word on Wednesday evenings.
