Revelation 2:12-17 Part 1

April 23, 2025

Last time we completed our look at the Lord’s letter to Smyrna, in Revelation chapter two. It was a letter of encouragement and commendation. Today, as we begin a study of the letter to Pergamum, we see a very different tone from the Lord. Pergamum had fallen into the hands of false teaching.  They were compromising. The Lord’s response? Repent!

We’re in the middle of a study of Revelation here on His Perfect Love. Today’s message from pastor Matt VanderVen is centered on the Lord’s message to the church in Smyrna, found in Revelation chapter two. Pain is never fun to experience or even talk about, but pain is inevitable. The church in Smyrna was suffering a barrage of persecution and tribulation, yet the Lord reminds them not to be fearful but rather be faithful. That’s an important point for Christians today as well.

It’s Good Friday but Sunday’s coming!  This is a day we set aside to recall the crucifixion of our Lord and Savior.  But the good news is, He didn’t stay in the grave.  He is very much alive today.  Something we celebrate on Easter, and really all year long.  Today on His Perfect Love pastor Matt Vanderven shares Luke’s account of the arrest, betrayal, crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus.  You’ll find it in chapters 22-24.

Trouble and turmoil is all around us, but this week we pause to remember there’s glorious hope to be found in the midst of it all, thanks to Jesus!  The focus today is on the resurrection of Christ.  This one single event altered the course of human history, but as you’ll see, it also affects our eternal destiny!

Have you ever been through a trial or period of discouragement, and then you received a note or message from a friend that really ministered to you? That’s exactly what the Lord did for the church in Smyrna in the second chapter of Revelation. Smyrna was suffering persecution for their faith, and also tribulation and poverty. This little passage of just four verses is a reminder to stay faithful, and keep on keeping on with eyes on the Lord.

Today on His Perfect Love we’ll meet a church that had left their first love, and we’ll see what to do if that should happen to us!

Today we’ll be looking at the Lord’s postcard to the church in Ephesus in Revelation chapter two. While they were commended for some things, they had walked away from their first love.  Their love had grown cold.  It happened to the Ephesians and it’s still happening to Christians today. If things aren’t where they used to be in your relationship with Jesus, today’s message will show you how to get back on track.

Today Matt continues his series in Revelation.  We begin a look at the first of seven letters Jesus gave to seven different first century churches.  But as you’ll soon discover it has great relevance to us today. In his letter to Ephesus, the key words are found in chapter two, verse four, “You have left your first love!"  Whether an entire church body, or an individual Christian, leaving the love relationship we have with Jesus is something to be avoided but what do you do if it happens?  Find out today!

Today the plan is to finish up Revelation chapter one. In verse twenty the apostle John speaks of the seven stars, the angels of the seven churches.  Now are these actual angels he’s referring to?  Pastor Matt doesn’t think so.  He’ll explain why he believes these to be pastors or elders of these seven churches and the church at large.

Pastor Matt VanderVen is developing a study in Revelation, and today we come back to the end of chapter one.  If we were to stare at the sun for even just a few seconds it can cause serious eye damage!  As the apostle John continues his description of Jesus the glorified King he speaks of His face like the sun, shining in all its brilliance.  Pastor Matt says that says something to us about Jesus’ glory and majesty!
