Today the plan is to finish up Second John.  There’s a lot of confusion today surrounding what loving others really means.  It’s not just giving people what they want to hear, or making them feel comfortable in their sin! We’ll learn today that if we’re not walking in obedience to the truth then we’re not exercising love!  We cannot separate truth from obedience because obedience is a function of love.

Today we begin a new book of the Bible, and that’s 2nd John!  The apostle John lived in dangerous times for Christians.  Persecution was at an all-time high and the church needed some encouragement!  It’s not surprising that the apostle of love would share a loving letter with them at such times, reminding them of God’s truth!

Recently we’ve received a really good working definition of love from the apostle John.  After defining love for us, he then describes what God did for us.  With that as a backdrop he now tells us we’re to love one another unconditionally with God’s perfect love. I think you’d agree that is so needed in a world full of hate and evil.

What we’re seeing in the world today is exactly what the apostle John prophetically wrote about in First John chapter four.  He couldn’t be more dead on, because the spirit of God was behind it.  You’re about to hear a warning not to believe and receive every spirit, but to test them.  We’ll learn why we’re to do that and how to do that right now!

Matt VanderVen is the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Harrisburg – West Shore.
