Paul’s Prayer for Experience

January 14, 2022

We are going through a series of case studies on prayer and spiritual encounters in the Bible. This message explores the greatest stack of model prayers in the New Testament — all found in the epistles of Paul. Paul’s letters are filled with prayers, and they are probably the biggest single stash of prayers in the New Testament that will help us understand how to pray.

The message of this particular prayer in Ephesians is that you should expect and seek profound, life-changing spiritual experiences of the love and joy of God. If we take a look and study the passage, we’re going to see: 1) Why we need it; 2) What that life-changing spiritual experience is; and 3) How to receive it.

This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 11, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Ephesians 3:14-21.

We are looking at a series of case studies on prayer and spiritual encounters in the Bible. This message is from the Psalms, which is the prayer book of the Bible. In the Psalms, there are many prayers by people who are suffering and who are asking God for help, asking God for rescue, for relief. This is a psalm that ends without hope, and has “darkness” as its last word. What is a prayer like this doing in the Bible? There are four messages this psalm teaches us: 1) Spiritual and personal darkness can last a long time no matter what you do; 2) Times of darkness are often the best places to learn about God’s grace; 3) Times of darkness can sometimes be the very best situation for you to grow into someone of greatness; and 4) Darkness can be relativized. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on November 4, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Psalm 88:1-2, 6-18. We are looking at Biblical case studies of prayer and spiritual encounters. This message centers around the encounter that Hannah, who eventually becomes the mother of the prophet Samuel, had with God.  We will examine: 1) The anatomy of Hannah’s pain; 2) The change in Hannah’s heart; 3) The secret in Hannah’s song. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 21, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:4-11; 2:1-10. We are looking at a series of case studies of prayer and spiritual encounters we find in the Bible. This message explores maybe one of the most famous and also one of the most astonishing prayers and answers in the Bible — an encounter between God and Moses.  What’s going on with this prayer? The answer is profound. We will examine 1) Moses’ prayer for our glory; 2) Moses’ prayer for God’s glory; 3) God’s answer to all of the prayers. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 14, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Exodus 33:12-23; 34:5-8. Although prayer and spirituality are very popular in our culture, we will see that what the Bible thinks about spirituality and what modern people think about spirituality aren’t necessarily the same things at all.  We are exploring Biblical case studies of people who had authentic and life-changing encounters with God. Today’s message looks at what happened when Jacob encountered God. How do you know that you don’t just believe in God, but that you’ve actually met him? If you meet God, according to this text, 1) You must meet God alone; 2) You must meet God for blessing; and 3) You must meet God at the point of weakness. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on October 7, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Genesis 32:22-31. What does real spirituality and connection with God truly mean? Real spirituality is knowing a God who comes to you and changes the way your heart works.  We are exploring Biblical case studies of people who had authentic and life-changing encounters with God. This message centers around the dialogue between Abraham and God. What do we learn from this text? Three things: 1) How Abraham prayed; 2) Why he was able to pray like that; and 3) How we can get what he had and more.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 30, 2007. Series: Real Spirituality - Prayer and Beyond. Scripture: Genesis 18:16-33. We are looking at how Jesus defines what it means to be a Christian. In this message, we are exploring the idea of Jesus as a Bridegroom. We know from reading the Old Testament that God defines himself as the Bridegroom and his people as the bride.  What does this mean for Christianity? It means that: 1) Christianity is a bond that consists both of duty and love; 2) Christianity is a bond of completing love; 3) Christianity is a bond of absolutely permanent love; 4) Christianity is a bond of utter exclusiveness; 5) Christianity is a bond of ravishing love.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 24, 1995. Series: Matthew 9. Scripture: Matthew 9:9-17. We are looking at the account of the tax collector, Matthew, coming to Christ. By looking at how Jesus brought Matthew to himself, we are laying out important principles about what it means to be a Christian. A Christian is someone who is called by a force outside themselves — both called away from something and called toward something. In this message, we will focus on what we’re called away from. Jesus says you can’t be a Christian unless you’re willing to be called away from religion. In this message, we’ll see 1) What religion means; 2) How Jesus smashes that definition; and 3) Some tests to see the extent to which we’ve moved away from religion.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 10, 1995. Series: Matthew 9. Scripture: Matthew 9:9-17. It's been taught that Christianity is basically like other religions — but Christianity is like nothing else. Everyone who has really become a Christian has had a sense of being awakened from some kind of sleep by an outside force. You thought you understood Christianity, but now you realize, "How radical! How new! How different!" A radical change has to happen inside. What does it mean to be a real Christian? A real Christian is someone who is called. What does it mean to be called? 1) You sense a power coming in from outside taking charge; 2) You are confronted with a person, not a lot of intellectual ideas; and 3) You rise and follow him. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on September 10, 1995. Series: Matthew 9. Scripture: Matthew 9:9-13. A warm and happy Christmas from Tim and Kathy Keller!
December 25, 2021
The beginning of the book of John doesn’t talk to us about the facts of Christmas — it tells us the meaning of Christmas. This passage from John 1 shows us that the meaning of the coming of Christ is tied to an incident in the life of Jacob. According to this text, the message of Christmas is that the heavens have been opened for those who have been humbled.  We will break down the two aspects of this message: First, that the heavens have been opened, and second, that the heavens have been opened for those who are humbled.  This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on December 20, 2009. Series: Christmas 2009. Scripture: John 1:43-51.
