Does God Harden Hearts?

June 6, 2024
Tim is a seminary student, and he’s been learning about predestination in his courses lately. In particular, he’s been studying Romans 9 where it talks about God hardening hearts.

So does God harden people’s hearts today? Does God pre-arrange who can respond to the Gospel and who can’t?

These were Tim’s questions when he called in to our program. In this episode, I share what’s really going on in Romans 9 and what the hardening of hearts actually means for you and me.

Are you ready to challenge conventional beliefs about your nature as a Christian? It’s time to dive deep into the provocative question of whether you’re truly good.“Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.” This statement by Jesus in Mark 10 has been used to tell believers they’re bad, not good. But is that really what Jesus meant? In this episode, I unpack why it’s absolute nonsense to say Christians are still bad after being born again. The truth of the Gospel is far more inspiring and liberating than you may have ever imagined.Listen and uncover the shocking truth from Scripture about your nature as a believer. It will help you embrace and celebrate that you’re unequivocally good!We hope you enjoyed this episode. Dan called the radio program recently to ask about assurance of salvation.Does a prayer of salvation require certain words or need to follow a specific formula? What if we don’t “feel” it? What if we change our minds? In this episode, I share how you can know your salvation is secure and permanent! We hope you enjoyed this episode. It can be disheartening when our friends or family members distance themselves from the message of God’s grace, showing no interest in discussing matters of faith with us.So, how can we approach this sensitive subject with love and care? And how can we express our heartfelt desire for their well-being through understanding the whole Gospel message?I recently shared a series of thought-provoking questions designed to facilitate conversations about God’s grace. The Gospel is undeniably great news, and it’s supposed to be fun to talk about it!We hope you enjoyed this episode. Galatians 5 mentions a hope of righteousness that might leave you wondering if being righteous is something still to come in the future. That was Walter’s question when he called into our radio program. In the video, I share the incredible hope of the Gospel we experience right now. It’s not about balancing the law with grace but living in newness of life in Christ.Listen and be encouraged in your freedom to jettison law-based, lifeless religion! We hope you enjoyed this episode. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day. (John 6:44)Sean called in to our radio program seeking counsel on John 6:44. Does this verse indicate God only invites certain people to Himself? That knowing God is simply a matter of fate?Well, if that’s the case, there wouldn’t be much point to evangelism or world missions. Sharing our faith would need to include the caveat, “this might not work if you’re not one of the chosen.”In this episode, I share more of what Scripture teaches about God’s heart for you and His loving invitation for anyone and everyone.

The message of God’s grace can sound radically different from anything Christians have heard in popular religion.God’s grace challenges what many believers have been taught regarding forgiveness. One Sunday, you hear that God remembers your sins no more. The next week, you’re told to confess your sins to receive forgiveness from God. So, which is it? Has God taken away your sins forever, or do you need to ask Him to do it daily?Or maybe you’re taught that grace and forgiveness are merely topics to be balanced with others like prayer, Bible reading, and spiritual disciplines. This relegates the core of the Gospel to a bin of “basics we’ve already covered.”In this episode, I tackle these mixed messages and explain how we can showcase God’s grace as the only doorway to true spiritual growth! We hope you enjoyed this episode. "A recent caller to the radio program asked if the Kingdom of God Jesus preached about is like a second Gospel message. In this episode, I address Jesus’ preaching that raised the bar on the law. It’s bad news – nails in the coffin – for people who think they can achieve righteousness through works or dedication. There’s a perfect and impossible benchmark you cannot reach if you’re trying to impress God with your actions. But there’s also a Gospel of good news if you’re willing to accept the gift of righteousness through faith!"We hope you enjoyed this episode. A recent caller to the radio program shared about a seminary student who decided to stop following Christ. Maybe you’ve heard a friend or loved one make a similar statement or decision. Can people really just wake up one day and decide they don’t love Jesus anymore? In this episode, I address several possibilities for answering this question, and it speaks to the permanence of our salvation. Here’s a hint: Nobody has temporary eternal life.We hope you enjoyed this episode.
