Old Friends

September 23, 2024

They say that you can’t just make “old friends”.  But every once in a while God sends someone into your life that becomes an old friend almost instantly.  These are people that you know will be a friend for the rest of your life.

Today’s guest, Bo Blackwell, is that kind of friend for our host.  Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings sang a song years ago called Old Friends.  In one the verses, Willie sings…  Lord when all my work is done, bless my life and grant me one, old friend.  Join us now with old friends.

Oh, the amazing sound of an elk in the mountains.  There are few sounds more beautiful, more majestic in God’s Great Outdoors.  God filled the high places of this world with the most beautiful sights and sounds.  The call of the elk, the screeching of a golden eagle as it floats on the updrafts on the peaks of the Rocky Mountains.  There is something about those places.   On today’s program we will climb to the highest peaks of the rockies in Wyoming.  Well, at least our stories and experiences will come from that part of the country,  We will join our host and his guest as they share elk hunting and elk camp stories from days gone by.

In a hunting lodge in the middle of central Michigan a family gathers each year for two very special hunts.  This family is not connected by human blood, but by something much stronger.  A group of otherwise unconnected individuals are drawn for two reason, to serve those that want to hunt and to share a special love for each one being served and for others.  Today’s program shares a little history of a few of those that comes from quite a distance to serve.  We’ll hear the stories of some of the special children that have come to this special place, Two Hats Ranch.  For the last 25 years the owners of Two Hats Ranch and Quest Ministries have offered these incredible deer hunts. For nearly 20 years there is an amazing family that have a “family reunion” of sorts.  Each one has a very special bond to the others.

We all hope to one day live a comfortable life.  Many work for 40+ years with the intent to one day have all we need financially and with health to be very comfortable.  But what does it mean to be comfortable and are we really called to be comfortable in life?  I would question if we are ever called to be comfortable spiritually.   Today’s guest will speak to the need to move out of our comfort zone and look for ways to do something that will change how we live life.   He will explain it in terms of hunting dangerous game around the world and being in and being out of his comfort zone.

Every one of us is born with a heart issue and today’s guest was born with both a spiritual and a physical condition.  We will hear about his battle to stay alive and how God is using him despite his heart condition. He has had more than one physical test as well as other tests over the last 6 or 8 years and you’ll hear him tell us that you can’t have a testimony if you don’t have a test.  He will also share that if we don’t give up control and allow God to handle things, we will never have peace and joy.

There is something special about a relationship that has lasted over decades.  Those friendships that may have been paused by miles or years seem even sweeter when they’ve been rekindled.  Our Host, Dean Hulce has been blessed with many friends all over the world.  Today our guest started out as a hunting client for Dean 35 years ago.  Many firsts were shared between the two of them.  Many species were hunted and harvested. All of these hunting memories were revisited on this weeks program along with laughter and tears.  Join us now as we head down the Trail To Adventure with old friends in God’s Great Outdoors

All outdoorsmen and women go through spans of time in their outdoors career where no matter what they do, things seem to go wrong.  Fishermen have many stories of the one that got away and hunters can tell you of the ones they’ve missed.  Hunting and fishing as well as all of life are hard and seemingly unfair at times.    For most of us that have been through these tough spells of shooting or setting the hook there comes a time of redemption.  A time that brings to an end the series of failures that we have dealt with for what seems like a long long time.

From the farms and woods of Northern Michigan to the prairies of South Dakota today’s guest has taken trophy animals for a young lady.  This young lady faced an early death and God pulled her through.  She was told that she would never play competitive sports, but she not only played, but she also thrived as a basketball player.  God has blessed this young lady with some great trophies, and she is humble and gives Him the credit.  She knows that it is only because of God’s favor that she has been able to not only fish, hunt, trap and play basketball but just to be here at this time.   We hope the through today’s show you learn that listening to your guide, whether it be in the outdoors, or in life, is the most important choice you can make.

We all have dreams for what we would like to do someday in our lives.  We desire things, some things that are selfish, and some that are for God’s glory.  If we are dreaming and fighting for those things that are what we want for ourselves, we are wasting our time and energy.  It’s when our hearts align with God’s heart, it’s then that God fulfills our dreams. It’s then that we see our dreams come true.

Every one of us at some time in our lives believes that we are facing something that is far too big to overcome.  All too often we use these things as crutches to not have to face the difficult things in life.  We may say we’ll do whatever it takes to get past our struggles, but will we really do it.   On today’s show we will meet a man that learned to cuss as a little boy working with the field works in the peanut fields of Georgia.  He faced obstacles and one day, after losing his mother, he decided from that day forward, he would not want to do anything that would have disappointed her.    God took this boy to great and beautiful places around north America… but more importantly, He took him on a life of spiritual adventure and victory.

In the wilds of far northern Ontario there are places where a person could walk for many days without coming out into civilization.  Some areas you could be attacked by wolves before you ever made it out.   To leave a boy in the wilds in these areas will certainly bring him closer to manhood in a hurry. Around the world there are many different thoughts on when a boy becomes a man or a girl becomes a woman.  In Jewish tradition this happens at 12 or 13 years of age…  But does a ceremony and a party make a child into an adult?  It’s been said that a boy becomes a man when he learns that he is not the most important person in his life.  This is the story on today’s program.
