As we look at the conflict in this passage about the healing of the man with the withered hand, it's easy to put all the blame on the Pharisees. Their zeal for the law was good, but they misunderstood the nature of grace.

What we need to be holding onto is the real nature of who Jesus is and what the gospel is—and have that story clear in our minds. Conflict often reveals the real nature of something. The conflict in this passage is intended to bring absolute clarity to what the real nature of the story of the gospel is.

We must speak the truth, but we must do so with love. The big issue today with this kind of problem of speech has to do with gender. Today there is a huge gender agenda. We need biblical discernment to balance truth and love in these issues.

About Josh Moody

Josh Moody (Ph.D., University of Cambridge) is the senior pastor of College Church in Wheaton, IL., president and founder of God Centered Life Ministries, and author of several books including How the Bible Can Change Your Life. He was an associate fellow of Jonathan Edwards College, Yale University (2007-2011), and his Cambridge University doctorate in Theology was published in 2005. Pastor Josh grew up south of London, became a follower of Jesus in the Church of England, was an undergraduate at Cambridge University where he was president of the Cambridge Inter-Collegiate Christian Union. He is married to Rochelle, and they have four children.
