The Gospel of Jesus—The Real Meaning of Passover

February 8, 2024

One of the most amazing things about the gospels is how much time they spend talking about Jesus' death. This is not what you normally get in a biography! But everyone has some form of suffering, so the focus on his death can resonate with us.

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? There are a number of differing views on this passage about last days, but the topic is secondary, not affecting our salvation. Josh Moody teaches that when Jesus talks about stars falling, he is referring to Old Testament political authorities.

There are so many different views about the end times and what chapters like this might mean, but the critical part is that we realize it is a secondary doctrinal issue. Our salvation does not depend on it, and many Christian leaders have had differences of opinion about it.

Sometimes those who are closest to Christianity have the hardest time realizing they don't completely understand it. To hang out in or grow up in the church is not the same thing as to be saved; to know things about God is not the same as being saved.

If you want fellowship, you have to have doctrine. If you want intimacy, you have to have truth. If you want healthy relationships, you have to have healthy biblical teaching.

It should not surprise us that Christianity is controversial. The message of the cross is a stumbling block for some and salvation for others. In today's passage, the religious leaders are unable to face the real issue while the widow sets the right example.

Language has power. Today we look at how we might be affected by the words we use. The people in Jesus' time had a wrong idea of what his kingship would be like. They were expecting a military king, but his kingship was truly revealed at the cross.

There is a massive challenge in leadership today, whether it's in the family or a business or the government. We struggle just in leading our own lives, trying not to get distracted by all the technological input that's out there. Josh Moody helps us sort out what we really want.

To such as these—the poor, the marginalized, the elderly, the infirm—belongs the kingdom of heaven. To be in the kingdom of God at all requires leaving behind your respectability, your sense of importance—and instead to be utterly dependent upon God.

How different would the history of the church across the globe have been if we had just paid more attention to what Jesus teaches here: aim to be a servant, not the master.

There is something in the human heart that is diminished by keeping but enlarged by giving. Our hand can only grasp on to life if we have released hold of the garbage of stuff. We cannot hold both together at the same time.
