One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Many people today are moving beyond an orthodox belief in God to relativism. We need to find a way to point people to the truth and to encounter the personal Truth, Jesus.

How can the Paul and Silas sing praise when God has allowed them to be beaten and thrown in prison? Shouldn't they be complaining? The answer is that they realized that the ultimate prize in life is not freedom from physical pain, but the presence of spiritual peace.

I sometimes wonder whether one of the signs of pride is a lack of rest or an increasing intensity. We do need to work hard and work for God. Yet where is the Sabbath principle in our lives? There is a temptation to take pride in how busy we are—and wear it like a badge.

The Spirit is about advancing the gospel of Jesus. So an irrefutable sign of our experiencing the Spirit will be that we will be telling our friends about Christ. We will be a church that doesn't just send out missionaries, we will be on mission here and now.

When the Bible clearly teaches on something, we stand on that, even if that means we are counter-cultural. There are things that we as a church stand on that people strongly disagree about, but if the Bible says it, we stick to it.

They had a sharp disagreement in Acts 15 over a minor matter after resolving a much larger matter earlier. But God is one so we must be one. Our unity is a reflection of God's nature and an answer to Jesus' prayer. We must make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

Each Christian is precious and we are to consider others as better than ourselves. Legalism always considers others worse than you because they don't meet your standards—they don't do things your way. But why should they? They are bound to follow Christ! The Law is good but it cannot save—it's a guiderail.

Acts 15 is the turning point of the whole story of the early church as they struggle with legalism regarding Gentiles following the law. Legalism seems attractive because we think we can save ourselves by doing straightforward tasks. But neither of those things are true.

The reality of the fallen world in which we all live is evidenced in Nehemiah 13. Here we have another Bible hero being seen honestly. Why does the Bible show us these things? Pastor Josh says it's to point us to the one real hero who won't disappoint us.
