Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? Part of the opposition Timothy faced was right under his nose—false teaching. Here Paul teaches how false teaching reveals itself and and therefore what to do about it.

When we look around at the world and politics and our society today, we wonder what's going on. Nothing has changed from Timothy's day. But we have hope because the gospel is so powerful, and it shows us how to be faithfully effective in our church and our world today.

Maybe you feel that the task you've been called to is a little too big for you, as it might have been for Timothy. You may have a difficult family situation or a physical illness, and yet God wants you to do something. How can you do it?
