Life to the Full: Pure Nard

August 9, 2024

Mary's anointing of Jesus is preached about and remembered to this day. This extraordinary, sacrificial gift has reverberated down through the years and calls us to realize that our sacrifices for Jesus will have an eternal impact as well.

Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? There is a great distance to be travelled between the head and the heart. How do we make that connection? There needs to be an intellectual grasp of the truth, but in order to really know God, you have to taste and see that He is good.

The power of the resurrection is not intended to only give you hope for your deathbed. It is intended to free you so you no longer live in the shadowlands of death. You have this resurrection power beginning to be at work in you now. We are in Christ now and are on the path to glory.

Jesus was deeply moved at the death of Lazarus. This word can also be translated "angry." Jesus is angry because death itself is the last enemy over which Jesus alone has the victory.

It is deeply ironic that those you would think would believe, do not. And those who you think would be the last people in the world to believe, they do. John is teaching us that faith works counterintuitively, different from what we would expect.

God blesses us so that we might be a blessing. Those today who preach a message that success and the prosperity of God means a bigger house or car have fundamentally misunderstood what it means to be blessed.

In today's passage, Jesus' references to a good shepherd would have been completely understood by his audience. They would have known what a shepherd is and does. The idea of the shepherd-king is deeply rooted in Israel's history going back to David. Today we learn about the Good Shepherd.

Jesus had a sense of urgency and made a deliberate use of his limited time. He wasn't just meandering around the hills of Jerusalem. He had an agenda and a job to get done, and He was very focused on it. As His disciples, we should have the same urgency to proclaim the gospel today.

It is thought by so many that suffering is a conundrum for Christianity. But actually, suffering is a confirmation of the Christian worldview and points to the Christian gospel. We worship a Christ who suffered. Jesus explains the purpose of suffering—that the works of God might be displayed.

The reason people back away from truth speaking is because they want the freedom to construct their lives any way they want. But actually, according to this passage, freedom does not come from less truth, but from the truth. True freedom is being the person you were made to be, and that means coming into alignment with the Creator's design. That truth will indeed set you free.

Have you ever felt that you couldn't make as big a difference in your life as you wanted? Does it feel like the darkness grows and pushes back at you in your headspace and in your heart? Jesus says He's the light of the world, and in this passage, we will bask in the warmth of that light and focus on this profound truth.
