iTeach #13 - No More Worrying About Worry

September 16, 2023

Part of why we worry is thinking that we are defined by our material acquisitions. That's the message we hear over and over again: we are what we earn. But Jesus said our nature and worth are not defined by what we own.

Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? We all have hurts; how do we deal with them and move on? We have to get a big picture of God. He is sovereign even over those things.

The book of Habakkuk is a great reminder for those of us who are committed to the Scriptures, particularly those of us who are preachers or Bible study leaders or parents, to not only be committed to the Scriptures, but also be committed to prayer. It is wise for the church to choose leaders who lead from their knees.

There is a great tendency in today's information age to assume that information is the same as wisdom. Habakkuk is a model for us. When he had a question, Habakkuk didn't go to Google, he went to God for answers.

Habakkuk was an Old Testament prophet, and this book was written a long time ago, yet the Bible is still relevant to us today. Habakkuk asks the kind of questions you and I might ask: What about justice?

This triad of virtues: faith, hope, and love—why is the greatest of these love? Because in heaven there will be no need for faith because we'll see Him, and there will be no need for hope because hope will have been fulfilled; all that is left is love. Heaven is a world of love—beautiful, real, possible, filled with grace, and offered to us.

Trying to satisfy yourself with things on earth—cars, houses, money, ambition, career—is like trying to satisfy a dolphin in a bathtub. Just as dolphins were made to swim freely in an open ocean, people are made for God.

We may meet Christians who worship differently than we do, who look different, who have a different language and culture—and yet we're one. When you meet a Christian, you know you're one in spirit. There's a mission purpose to this unity.

One of the most mistaken teachings of today is to say that we can make people more moral or make them behave in a way that we approve of. But all that happens is that people outside the church feel annoyed that we are dictating to them how they should behave. It doesn't work, because God must do it. Only God can bring holiness.

We can use the things of the world, but we shouldn't be controlled by them. We can take ideas, practices, and things from other cultures and reshape them and use them for God's glory. We can be discerning to use tools that were created outside of a strict Christian background because God is the God of whole universe.

The Reformation was a time when great Christian leaders rediscovered the message of the Gospel in the Scriptures. The reformers articulated a way to be in the world but not of it, and revival followed.
