Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? God's purpose is to bless us. The Apostle Paul tries to persuade the Ephesians that God wants what is good for us, including salvation. God has ultimate good and everlasting favor for us.

The theme of this series is The Heavenly Places and the aim is encouragement. If we really understand what Paul is saying here about the heavenlies, then the result will be not feeling so sad or depressed. Writing from prison, Paul encourages the Ephesians to focus on the spiritual reality around them so that their physical circumstances are put into a different context.

Their reaction is so human—after being told by the angel at the tomb to go and tell, they run away and are silent. They've been told by the angel, "Don't be afraid," and yet they are scared. But we would be likely to do the same thing. It's reassuring that our hope is not based on performance, but on who Jesus is.

Many people have tried to define joy. Happiness is short-lived, joy is long-lasting. More than elevated feelings, joy is a mode of being. Joy is the sense that we are aligned with the ultimate purpose of life.

Who finally gets it right? A Roman—a centurion of all people! He correctly identifies Jesus as the Son of God. It must have shocked others who were listening. This leads us to the point of opening up the extraordinary truth of who Jesus is as shown through the most unlikely places.

One of the most amazing things about the gospels is how much time they spend talking about Jesus' death. This is not what you normally get in a biography! But everyone has some form of suffering, so the focus on his death can resonate with us.

There are a number of differing views on this passage about last days, but the topic is secondary, not affecting our salvation. Josh Moody teaches that when Jesus talks about stars falling, he is referring to Old Testament political authorities.

There are so many different views about the end times and what chapters like this might mean, but the critical part is that we realize it is a secondary doctrinal issue. Our salvation does not depend on it, and many Christian leaders have had differences of opinion about it.
