One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? The view of children has changed throughout history. In Jesus' time, a distance was expected between children and adults. The disciples wanted to send the children away when they came to Jesus. The disciples were shocked at how Jesus responded to the children.

Today we look at the accounts of the transfiguration and the crucifixion. These stories aren't just a history of what happened, they are a message that can transform our lives today.

Why was the blind man healed twice? Did Jesus not get it right the first time? What are we to learn from this? He is the Savior, not just a healer or a teacher. Jesus' miracles always point to spiritual lessons.

Money is such a sensitive topic to teach on and there can be confusion and a lack of clarity. Jesus doesn't call for a monastic life, nor is he anti-treasure. He just encourages us to store up our treasure in heaven.

Jesus feeding the crowds is a deliberate fulfillment of the messianic pattern in the Old Testament. God had fed his people in the wilderness with manna from heaven, and now Jesus gives people bread from heaven. The astute in the crowd that day may have realized the connection.

Today we think that if someone has good intentions, they must be doing things the right way. But the Pharisees were sincere and wanted to follow God, and Jesus said they had it entirely wrong. Jesus gave the most stinging rebukes to the religious leaders who thought they knew religion.

We see Jesus leaving the disciples and going up the mountain to pray. If Jesus took the time to do this, how much more important is it for us to focus on our personal relationship with God? Private prayer is the fuel for all spiritual progress.

Because we have God's Word in our hands and we live on the other side of the resurrection, we may know more about who Jesus is than those who actually saw him do miracles in person. Josh Moody explains that this is one more reason to focus on the Word of God.
