One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? A truly free person is free to serve, to give, to love; they are no longer bound by the biggest slavery—to self. In this passage, Paul talks about using his freedom for the benefit of others and giving up his rights in order to serve.

Imagine the Apostle Paul walks in the door, fired up, and he tells you to ask your questions. The book of 1 Corinthians is full of questions—ones the church there had asked Paul. This passage holds some answers for us too.

Every Christian should be deliberately weaving people into his or her life so they can see what it means in practice to live as a follower of Jesus. The Christian walk isn't an event or a program, it's a life, and you only really get that when you see it. Our lives are to be an example of Christlikeness.

One of the great dangers of excessive studying to gain knowledge is that it leaves us finding it harder to love people. Knowledge without love just makes you proud. When knowledge is joined with love, it can be of great benefit not only to yourself but to others.

While most of us are not likely to be tempted to be a part of a literal idol sacrifice, there are many who sacrifice their children for their careers. As Paul dialogues with the Corinthians, we learn more about idols.

Jesus was single, and no one regards him as having missed out on life. Singleness, according to Paul, provides an opportunity for living with undivided devotion for the Lord. Today singleness is more accepted in general society than it is in the church. Churches can be so concerned about family that they disregard single people or treat them as less spiritually mature. For some, singleness is a call from God.

The human longing to find a mate for life is reflected in the constant stream of romantic books and movies. If it sells, we must want to be married, however hard it is to sustain it successfully. Paul speaks in this passage about marriage from his own experience.

Even with diversity in the church, there are absolutes. There is truth; there is one true gospel. Regardless of your background, there is hope in the gospel of Jesus Christ that declares us righteous.

So many Christians spend their lives living as if it is works and a good moral effort that will get them to heaven. That is not how God has designed His salvation plan. We need to defeat the legalism that kills our faith.
