Endangered Virtues - A Clarion Call for Salt

October 24, 2023

Here we interview Michael Phillips, editor of George MacDonald's materials and the author of a new book called "Endangered Virtues and the Coming Ideological War." What are the basic virtues without which civilization is not possible? And how shall we then live in an age of immaturity, insobriety, escapism, relativism, fear, and abandoned rationality? Michael Phillips recommends disengaged engagement—what Jesus called salt that regains its saltiness.

Man is always a moral creature, and yet what happens when Harvard University loses its moral compass? The compass is spinning out of control now, and nobody knows which woke is the wokest. Why was antisemitism a sin, and on what basis? What about abortion? What about anything that goes on in this world? The secular university has a really hard time answering those questions. Here we review the decline of American moral standards at the university, and the decline of the American academic performance. The average ACT steadily declined from 22.0 to 19.5 since 1970. Average math scores dropped from 22.0 to 19.0 over the same time period.

Italy, Sweden, and the US are the most tattooed nations on Earth. Now, 56% of women ages 18 to 29 and 53% of women ages 30 to 49 are tattooed in this country. The post-Christian nations went for it at the turn of the 21st century, while pagan nations went the other way. Cultural expression is the externalization of worldview. Generally, cultural phenomenon is an honest reflection of a person's real religion, or at least the expression of the predominating worldview. We look at the two most common reasons for tattooing—identity or identification and self-definition, and recommend Jesus' tattoo over all the others.

Increasingly socialist nations are run by idealist young people and women . . . and women-led nations are almost exclusively Roman Catholic. Now, 55% of women in this country identify with socialism. But, not all women. Feminists find their security in the state. . . . They have given up on the biblical family . . . and marriage . . . and their hope is that the state will take care of them and their children, womb to tomb. What's needful now? Disciple the young men.

Men and manhood have been increasingly targeted by the zeitgeist. Evangelical Christian men are accused of being oppressive patriarchs and prone to abuse. Author and professor Nancy Pearcey dismisses the bad stereotypes and points out the internal contradictions in the anti-male worldview that predominates throughout the academic and social systems of the day.

The number of witches in the US increased from 8,000 in 1990 to 340,000 in 2008, and exceeded 1.5 million in 2020. Halloween expenditures in the US have doubled since 2007, and the horror genre in the movie theater has almost tripled in marketshare in 10 years. There are three worldviews that collide in these films—the sovereignty of God, the sovereignty of man, and the sovereignty of evil. The fear of God, the fear of man, and the fear of evil. . . . Guess who loses in the movie theater? We proclaim the true Gospel. Christ really did crush the head of the serpent! Death took the death blow at the cross and by His resurrection! God will judge evil, and God is to be feared. And Christians do not celebrate Halloween, and the Day of the Dead.

Streaming TV now runs a 95% to 5% ratio on mature to family friendly programming. Fifteen years ago, that was closer to a 45% to 55% ratio. Then again, social media is displacing everything now with its own destructive world and social view in mind. Christian families too often give way to the world and the devil when it comes to media. How do we overcome the world? We explain from Scripture.

War inevitably introduces atrocities, and the foul nature of sinful man comes out in full color at times like this. Briefly, we look at atrocities from the US Civil War, World War II, and the present. We are to view these atrocities through a biblical lens, and of course apply Micah 6:8 at every point.

Here we summarize a basic worldview on war—the cause of war, the rules of warfare, assigning blame, and ways to avoid war. The best way to avoid war is Proverbs 16:7. When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. How might our leaders please the Lord?

Years ago, Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris called for "natural selection to take its course." That was what they put on their website, and then they killed 13 innocent students and staff at Columbine High School in the Denver Metro area. One father still feels the pain of it. Brian Rohrbaugh recounts that terrible day that he lost his son to the shooters, and what he learned from it. How do the schools open the door for physical violence and soul violence?

Evangelicalism is coming apart on the question of repentance. Does following Jesus include leaving the world and the LGBT lifestyle? Does a sinner need to be repentant to be part of a church, or should the homosexual, the homosexual “married” guys, the pedophiles, and others feel comfortable joining the rest of the sinners sitting in the pews? Did Jesus draw lines or circles? What does the parent do when a young son or daughter comes “out of the closet?” Pray. Grieve. Call to repentance. Then, wait for the prodigal to come back home.
