Harry Potter is the biggest pop-cultural phenomenon in the post-Christian zeitgeist today. The tenth movie in the franchise raked in $400 million last week at the box office. After reading the eighteenth encouragement from Christian reformed/classical/literary enthusiasts to embrace Harry Potter, Kevin Swanson finally reads the book and watches a Harry Potter film. Shall we encourage our eight-year-olds into this fantasy genre? Or would this sign us up for the Matthew 18:6 treatment? Here is a careful analysis of the Harry Potter worldview in this parallel universe of autonomy.

Most everybody acknowledges by now that there is something very wrong with the modern evangelical mess. Young people are seeking the authentic, the biblical, the true, the essential, and the foundational. It is the God-centered. It is the work of God, not the work of man. It is the fear of God . . . and heart-love for God—and it will manifest itself in music.

After fifty years of incorporating women leadership into churches, the survey is in . . . women lead in dying denominations. A careful analysis of women-led denominations indicates terrible trends towards liberalism and serious membership attrition. Where men abdicate as spiritual leaders in family and church, the results are catastrophic for the faith in following generations. Steadfast anchoring to faith amidst the storms will require men at the helm. The breakdown of men in family and church is a curse on society. The judgment of God is seen upon a nation where men are walking down the river. And, there is no fixing a nation or churches without a restoration of men . . . who will retain faith in God . . . and begin to lead again in home and church.

The wrong view of man’s nature results in the wrong view of everything, leading to tyranny, the centralization of power and wealth in the hands of a few oligarchs, and the demolition of nation states. Here is an article from the American Thinker that carefully details how the centralization of control of money leads to the slow but steady destruction of an economy through inflationary policies. John Maynard Keynes showed his cards at one point, admitting that “there is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million can diagnose.”

Should Christians involve themselves politically? Should the church warn civil leaders? Why is the church so paralyzed when it comes to cultural matters? We can speak of escaping the world, ignoring the world, transforming the world, or amalgamating into worldly culture—but is anybody speaking of “overcoming” the world? That’s the word to use, because it is the biblical word. Here we review Eric Metaxas’s book “Letter to the American Church.” 

They come in like a storm and they burn out like a bad rocket. These billionaires are the wrong guys to change the world, but they somehow think they will succeed. We consider the worldviews of these insta-billionaires churned out of the tech industry over the last 15 years. God is still merciful upon this nation, especially to Christians who wish to maintain freedom of conscience and the right to free speech in the public square. There are reasons to be grateful, but Kevin Swanson puts this back into context. What about Obergefell? What about Bostock? Freedoms hold on by a thin thread on this Independence Day 2023.
