Dr. Ken Hutcherson: A Defender of Truth - I

April 12, 2022

Ken Hutcherson was born a week after his mother’s 15th birthday in rural Alabama. While growing up in an environment of deep racism, of which he experienced hatred first hand, Ken developed his own disdain toward others. Fortunately, as a young man, he was able to take his anger out on the football field. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the late pastor of Antioch Bible Church shares how God inspired him to use the Bible as his real life playbook, and how it motivated him to take bold stands against injustice, abortion, and homosexuality.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Tony Evans, senior pastor of Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, proclaims that God is not colorblind. Nor is He blinded by color. The Lord does not want the racial distinctives that He created to be the ultimate source of our identity. The answer to today’s racial division? The church can model biblical reconciliation and unity through service, not seminars or soundbites. Each of us must recognize that everyone is created in God’s image.

Launching her career as a contestant on the popular television program, American Idol, gospel singer Mandisa went on to eventually win a Grammy in 2013 for best Contemporary Christian album. Along the way she sold over 1.6 million records. But, on today’s edition of Family Talk, Mandisa reveals her pain beyond the accolades. In her new book, Out of the Dark, she describes the incalculable pain of molestation and rape, and the feelings of inadequacy that followed. After the loss of a close friend to cancer, the grief from her past traumas rose to the surface, resulting in her falling into a deep depression and isolation. Through community and counseling, Mandisa finally found joy. Psalm 40:3 is her testimony, “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear the Lord and put their trust in him.”

Fourteen years ago, Katherine Wolf suffered a massive stroke which led to thirteen surgeries and a life of limited mobility and other challenges. Since then, she’s disrupted the myth that joy can only be found in a pain-free life. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the author of Hope Heals points to Colossians 3 where the Apostle Paul wrote, “Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” No matter what trial you’re enduring, Katherine calls you to persevere.

One day, Katherine Wolf was a 26-year-old wife and the doting mother to her six month old baby boy. The next day, without warning, she suffered a massive brain stem stroke. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the author of Hope Heals recounts how she was in a coma for nearly three months. Today, fourteen years later, Katherine is living her best life possible, given so many physical obstacles. She utilizes a wheelchair at times but declares it’s just an avenue to her freedom and only pushes her forward. A song lyric that she loves from David Crowder is, “Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal.” Katherine exhorts believers to acknowledge their own “invisible” wheelchairs and how God can use their weaknesses for His glory.

All believers, young and old, have a deep longing to know God's divine will. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, author of The 4 Wills of God, explains the key is to follow the Lord’s universally-revealed four wills, as summarized by the acronym “BAGS.” Believe in Jesus Christ. Abstain from sexual sin. Give thanks in everything. Submit and do what's right. When you obey these four universal truths, it activates the unique and perfect will of God in your life.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs, author of Love & Respect, warns against what he’s dubbed “the Crazy Cycle.” In the midst of conflict, without love, the wife reacts without respect. And without respect, the husband, in turn, reacts without love. It’s a never-ending vortex! Dr. James Dobson is convinced that love and respect are the biblical prescriptions that can preserve marriage and prevent divorce.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Christina Francis, chairwoman of the board of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, tells our own Dr. Tim Clinton that she is hopeful that Roe v. Wade can be overturned, depending on the result of the Dobbs v. Jackson Supreme Court case, to be decided this June. AAPLOG submitted a legal brief in the Mississippi case, supporting the state’s ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy. The pro-life OB-GYNs warn that post-abortive women face a seven times greater likelihood of suicide. Dr. Francis declares, “Abortion is not healthcare, because pregnancy is not a disease. It is a natural process of the body!”

Did you know that before Roe v. Wade, the once reputable American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists opposed killing babies in the womb? Tragically, the group by and large became aggressively pro-abortion once the egregious law was passed in 1973. In the late 2000s, the organization declared that if a physician will not perform or refer an abortion, he or she is unethical, and should even lose his or her license. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Christina Francis explains that the American Association of Pro-life Obstetricians and Gynecologists was formed to reaffirm the value and dignity of individual human life in all stages of growth and development. Their 60,000 pro-life members, who are all doctors, assert that science is demonstrably on the side of life -- from the moment of conception.

As students go deeper in their Christian faith, they are often faced with the questions, “How do we know there’s a God?,” “What’s the evidence for intelligent design?,” and “How do we know that Scripture is true?” On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Jeff Myers, president of Summit Ministries, explains how to equip young people with the answers by enrolling them in a Summit summer program. Attendees will discover what the Bible says about abortion, evolution, gender identity, homosexuality, marriage, and pornography. If you have kids or grandkids in high school or college, today’s program could change their life’s trajectory.

The vast majority of young people do not believe in absolute truth, that Christ is divine, or that the Bible is the Living Word. No wonder 75% say they have no sense of purpose and over half struggle with depression. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Jeff Myers, president of Summit Ministries, explains that after young adults graduate from the Summit’s 2-week summer program, 86% have a biblical worldview compared to the 4% national average. They also become equipped to stand up for and defend truth -- with a capital “T” -- in college and beyond. When Dr. Dobson’s son, Ryan, attended as a teen in 1987, it changed his life.
