In entering the water of baptism alongside repentant sinners, Jesus identifies with them. Ultimately, he will fulfil all righteousness by taking their place at the cross and standing for them as the Son who truly pleases the Father.

Who can understand the power of the Almighty God? None of us fully can. Our perception of the extent and greatness of his power is so limited—and it certainly is too small. Our aim in this message is simply to try and expand our view of the power of God and to move toward a more biblical proportion—to catch even a glimpse of his might from the pages of his Word.

John the Baptist heralds the Lord’s arrival. Many might have expected the arrival of the Lord’s salvation to be news of pure comfort, but his arrival will actually be uncomfortable for everyone: he will refine his people and judge his enemies. The right response to the arrival of Jesus’ Kingdom is to repent—for this kingdom will be made up of those who repent and show fruit.

After baby Jesus is born, God makes him the fulfilment and embodiment of his plans for his ‘son’ Israel, whom he previously called out of Egypt. As the story progresses, we will see how he is faithful in that calling where Israel was not. Ultimately, Matthew will show us that the salvation of God’s people rests entirely on the faithfulness of Jesus in his calling to be God’s true ‘son’.

Many of our difficulties in the Christian life stem from the fact that we don’t really know God as we ought to know him. Our view of God is too small—too domesticated—too much formed by personal opinion and cultural assumption—and not nearly enough formed by the teaching of the Scriptures, through which God has made himself known. We begin this new series on the eternity of God—the truth that God in his being transcends time and is uniquely eternal. This is a vital truth for us to explore.

There is no escaping it: we will all be disappointed at times by politicians, teachers, bosses, and community leaders—people who hold the responsibility of directing us and promoting our best interests, but who turn out to be unable to carry it through. This psalmist admonishes us not to put our trust in human leaders. And then he draws our hearts to put our hope in the right place—in the Lord himself.

About Encounter the Truth

Through faithful teaching of the Scriptures, Encounter the Truth seeks to facilitate encounters with the truth of God’s Word—and ultimately, with the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the Truth that came down from heaven. Our prayer is that those who do not yet know Jesus will come to a saving knowledge of the truth, that believers will be established in the truth, and that, through this, local churches will be strengthened.
