What does it mean to be blessed? Throughout the Bible, “being blessed” meant that God’s favor was on someone through a variety of circumstances and situations in life. Sometimes we can misunderstand what this looks like and assume that “being blessed” is the same as “being lucky” or having a lot of material possessions but that’s not it. The truth is, “being blessed” is more than just material prosperity, or having situations in life work out the way we want them to... In fact, experiencing the favor of God on your life comes from being deeply connected to Jesus. So, how can we live a blessed life?Throughout theBible,“beingblessed”meantthatGod’sfavorwasonsomeonethroughavarietyofcircumstancesandsituationsinlife.Sometimeswecanmisunderstandwhatthislookslikeandassumethat“beingblessed”isthesameas“beinglucky”orhavingalotofmaterialpossessionsbutthat’snotit.oThetruthis,“beingblessed”ismorethanjustmaterialprosperity,orhavingsituationsinlifeworkoutthewaywewantthemto...oInfact,experiencingthefavorofGodonyourlifecomesfrombeinconnectedtoJesus.IfIwe'retoaskeveryoneinthisroomwhowantstoexperiencetheblessingofGodontheirlife,wewouldallsay,“yesplease”!So,howcanweliveablessedlife?

By referring to wives as the “weaker vessel” Peter was not saying wives are “inferior” to “husbands.” Yet, this was a common belief in Peter’s Day. Roman legal system assumed women to be weak and incapable of making sound decisions on their own. “This was primarily due to the influence of Aristotle (GreeK philosopher), who argued, women were by nature inferior to men in every way, except sexually.” (Background Commentary O.T.) Men and women are different, anatomically men have greater muscle mass than women. But that doesn’t mean women are “inferior.” Peter was referring to the “social status” of wives. Women were not “honored,” socially. Peter is calling Christian husbands to show “honor” toward their wives in public, due to their “social disadvantage.”

One of the greatest miracles on earth, which has often been taken for granted, is “holy matrimony.” The marital union between a man and a woman is an institution “ordained” by God but “distained” by the devil. According to one website – “Over the last 50 years the marriage rate in the U.S. has dropped nearly 60%.” (Axios.com) There are many contributing factors to this decline, but it is also clear that the institution God ordained is definitely under “attack!”

We are not to “ingratiate” ourselves, or “fight fire with fire,” for the sake of others. But rather, “commit ourselves to Him who judges righteously.” When we are committed to Christ, we will naturally reflect God’s love!

With a name like Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, Nero was a young “egomaniac.” Soon after Peter’s writing he blamed the Christians for the fire in Rome (July 18, 64 A.D.) and put many innocent people to horrible deaths! Peter himself, in 64 A.D. would be put to death by Nero’s command. Foxes Book of Martyrs -crucified upside down – not worthy to be crucified like his Lord. Yet, Peter, despite the corrupt political and moral environment of his day, called believers to exercise spiritual etiquette. Today, God calls us to do the same!

Spiritual etiquette is “strategic” in that it enables us to maintain a proper spiritual perspective. It’s a call to live our lives as “revolutionaries,” rather than reactionaries! To be spiritual “thermostats” rather than social “thermometers!” Impacting the social climate, of our day, through “Christ-centered etiquette is “strategic” in that it enables us to maintain a proper spiritual perspective. Peter is writing these verses to communicate that, because of Jesus, you and I will never be a “has been” as a Child of God. We are forever a part of His family, because we put our faith in Jesus. As a result, we have a future and a Hope without end. This is the “good news,” of the gospel that has been proclaimed for generations.
