Taming The Untamable Part 2

February 18, 2025

There’s probably no muscle that is harder to control than the tongue.  We’ve all experienced saying something that later we wished we hadn’t... whether it be a curse word, or something that hurt another a great deal.  It’s amazing how such a small part of the body can have such a large impact.  No wonder James likens it to a fire!  Let’s see now how we can use it for good rather than evil.

Today on The Dwelling Place, as we return to our study of James, we’ll be reminded of the power of words. They have the power to motivate millions of people to hang tough in a difficult situation, and they have the ability to cut a person to ribbons. The human tongue weighs just a few ounces, yet it is capable of extraordinary good - or evil!

Today on The Dwelling Place we’re encouraged toward a life of honesty and integrity… in all that we say and do. It’s an important sign of an established heart. What does that exactly mean? Let’s find out!

We’ve committed verses like Ephesians 2:8-9 to our memory - “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast”.  Then we run across the verses in James that at first glance seem to contradict the doctrine of salvation by grace alone through faith alone:  “Faith without works is dead.”  But today on The Dwelling Place we’ll see that these passages are actually complimentary.

As we study James chapter two today, we’re going to discuss a subject of some controversy - the relationship between faith and works. James says faith without works is dead, while Paul said we are saved by faith, apart from any works! Is there a way for these two statements to co-exist?

Have you been exposed to bigotry recently? It’s a terrible problem in today’s world. The problem has reached such heights that people are routinely killed or injured simply because of the color of their skin. Today on The Dwelling Place, we’ll be addressing the problem of regarding people based on superficial things.... which is what bigotry is really all about.

In our day and age we’re encouraged to have favorites... from our favorite ice cream to our favorite sports team.  We have our favorite restaurant, and favorite friends too.  On today’s program, we’ll see James underscore the sin of partiality.   We’ll soon see that when it comes to the law of love there is no room for prejudice.

If there’s one concrete lesson to be learned in the second half of James chapter one, it’s the fact that there’s a huge difference between saying you’re a Christian and living a life that reflects that you’re a Christian. We find here in James one that we are to be “doers of the word”.

Our focus today continues to be what pastor Al calls the “entourage of arrogance”.  What is mankind’s biggest problem, when it comes to a relationship with God? It’s pretty simple. We don’t think we need a God. Who knows better what’s best for me than me? That attitude is a recipe for disaster, and pastor Al will share the reasons why today, as we continue in James chapters four and five.

Today on The Dwelling Place, Al Pittman resumes his verse by verse study of James, by taking us back to chapter one.  In verses nineteen through twenty-seven, we find James referring to something that will put us in a position to receive and respond to God’s Word.

Everyone admires consistency. To be a consistent Christian is a real challenge, isn’t it? Trials come our way. Temptation is always out there. James has some great insights regarding consistency in the first chapter of his epistle, so turn there and join us if you would
