Meat Eaters
Genesis 3:17
“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;”
The Bible tells us that when God created the world, He gave us plants to be our food. Likewise, animals were also designed to eat just plants. In the world to come, we can also expect animals to be plant eaters, as the lion lies down with the lamb. But in our world today, there are many carnivorous animals. Nature does, indeed, sometimes seem to be “red in tooth and claw”, but why do animals eat meat? It would seem to be one of the many deleterious effects of Adam’s sin on the world. Today, many vegans propose that eating meat is so wrong that we should provide vegan diets for animals in our care – particularly our pet dogs and cats.
Few animals are perfectly carnivorous. In the wild, dogs are omnivorous. It can, with care, be just about possible to offer a pet dog a carefully balanced vegetarian diet, though most veterinarians would not recommend it. Some animals, however, are obligate carnivores. Whatever their metabolism when they were created, they now lack the ability to manufacture certain important materials. Cats cannot make their own taurine or Vitamin A, both of which are necessary to them, and can only get such materials from eating meat. While there may be individual exceptions, it is not possible to feed your cat a vegetarian diet. It will not survive.
We must recognize that this world is not as God created it. Until He makes it anew, there will be meat eaters.
Prayer: Father, we know that You made this world perfect. One day, You will make it perfect again forever, so we thank You and praise You. Amen.
