EPIC: High-Impact Truths in the New Testament – Part 6

September 8, 2024

Ever felt like the Law was a relentless taskmaster, showcasing your every flaw? In my latest message on Romans 7:1-8, we explore Paul’s compelling analogy that challenges conventional wisdom on how to fight temptation. It’s not about a process of dying to sin—it’s about realizing you’re already free from its grip!

You’ll discover how the Law, while a perfect standard, can actually enhance sin’s power when you’re under it. But here’s the kicker: Paul reveals a radical solution to immorality that might just surprise you. Ready to explore how we serve God in a brand new way?

Click to watch and uncover the liberating truth that could transform your understanding of grace and freedom from sin.

Discussion Questions:

1. Read verses 1-4. What’s the analogy? What’s the takeaway?

2. Read verses 5-6. What did the Law do? Why were we released? How do we serve God now?

3. Read verses 7-8. How does Paul demonstrate that he means the Ten Commandments here? What is his solution to immorality? (Hint: See the end of verse 8 and discuss.)

4. Read verses 9-11. How are these verses about the Law’s effects and not about some “process” of Paul dying and sin becoming alive? (Note: Paul was already dead and sin was already alive.)

5. Read verses 12-13 and react to this statement: The Law is good, but put me under it, and watch sin be showcased as utterly sinful!

6. Reflection: Do you think this passage is setting Paul up to talk about his struggle under the Law as an unbeliever (devout Jew) or as a believer? Why?

Does the Holy Spirit sometimes speak through us? What does that entail? Is “once saved, always saved” really true? What about being lukewarm? Isn’t there an unpardonable sin? What’s on your heart and mind lately, Andrew? How should we view the impossible demands of the Sermon on the Mount? My long-time boyfriend and I are both believers, and we are living together. What are your thoughts on sex outside of marriage?”

Some think they’re hearing from those who have died. What do you say to that? I was in the hospital for a month with cancer and experienced a lot of accusation and condemnation in my mind. Where was that coming from? My dad is pressuring me to keep the Sabbath day. Am I supposed to? How can I harness the power to heal the sick?

Sometimes, I wonder about my salvation. I did backslide a while ago. Now I wonder about my desire to read the Bible, attend church and donate money. I guess I’m just wondering why I’ve lost my motivation and how I can get it back!

Is love only a decision, not a feeling? What about when you’re dating? Is physical attraction important? Who needs to lose their life in Mark 8? Why does Jesus say this? I can’t seem to find a church where they’re truly proclaiming the depths of the Gospel. It seems like so many churches are telling believers they’re never quite good enough for God!

What is “childlike faith”? What does it look like? I want peace with God, and I wonder how I can have that relationship with God as my Father. Can you help me? What is one powerful passage of Scripture I can share with a friend who wants to learn about the message of God’s grace? *Previously aired.

Why do some people only read what appears to be half of Romans 8:1? Should I be good friends with unbelievers if they’re pulling me away from other Christians? Does Hebrew 6 mean the blood of Jesus could run out on me? I don’t understand the Old Testament story of Hosea and Gomer. Why would God ask Hosea to marry a prostitute? *Previously aired.

If you think you know grace, think again! In my latest message from Romans 6 – one of the most power-packed passages in the entire Bible – we’ll see grace isn’t a license to sin but what keeps you walking by the Spirit and on the right path. Paul’s question, “Or do you not know...?” serves as a wake-up call to the radical transformation you’ve undergone. Imagine living as your new self, free from the old baggage, and fully embracing who you are in Christ. This passage will also revolutionize your understanding of temptation. It’s not about denying or dying to self; it’s about loving yourself and living out your true identity! Watch now and explore the healthy and encouraging truths Romans 6 has in store for you. Discussion Questions: 1. What happens to God’s grace when we sin? So, why not just sin? 2. What significance does “or do you not know…?” hold in this passage? 3. What kind of baptism (water or spiritual) is Paul talking about? What happened to you as a result of being baptized? 4. Why does Paul mention how many times Jesus died here? What does it mean for you? 5. How specifically does this passage transform the way you react to a sinful thought? 6. React to this statement: I’m the new self, so I don’t need to deny myself or die to self. Instead, I can love myself and be myself!

Why does Paul mention defilement of flesh and spirit if we cannot be spiritually defiled as believers? Is the Roman Catholic church the one true church? My brother is a minister, and he is sleeping with multiple women and involved in substance abuse. What should I do? Some say that home church or online church doesn’t “count.” What are your thoughts? Why is the Apocrypha not in our canon of Scripture? What are the good works that God has prepared in advance for us? Why is the Word of Faith movement so damaging? What is the truth about the false idea of guaranteed health or wealth?

What is discernment? Some of my friends listen to explicit music that is laced with profanity. How should I deal with this situation? My friend quotes Matthew 19 to say that we’re still under the 10 Commandments today. What’s the truth?
