Love is the Compelling Motivator Part 1

May 31, 2024

Do you enjoy a good love story?  We’ve got a good one for you in Genesis chapter 29.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll take a look at Jacob’s love life.  And it’s interesting to note the very large commitment that he displayed in order to marry Rachel.  It’s a good reminder to us of the commitment needed to the Lord and our spouse, as we enter into a marriage.

Right now we’re in Genesis chapter 28, and for the next 8 chapters the focus will be on Jacob.  Up until now we’ve seen Jacob up to no good, but God got a hold of his life.  And we begin to hear of his transformation and really the saving of Jacob in this chapter.

We enter Genesis chapter 28 today and the focus is on Jacob.  If you’ll recall, he had just deceived his father into receiving the blessing.  Yes Jacob was a conniver, a heal catcher.  But God would change his life, and he would be governed by God.  We’ll hear all about this transformation which should encourage us all in light of our sin-stained past.

In Genesis chapter 27 we find a family in disarray.  Their rebellion will make life very hard for them, and it all started with doing the right thing the wrong way!   It would lead to a man being deceived by the people he trusted the most.  And a son who is angry and bitter over what had happened.  Let’s be encouraged to always do the right thing the right way as we join pastor Ed Taylor.

We see examples all over the Bible that we can learn a great deal from.  Some good and some bad!   And in Genesis chapter 27 we receive some strong warnings through examples.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll learn that God’s will must be done God’s way.  We’ll hear of a family that didn’t do that, and paid the price.  If we’re wise we’ll learn from their example.

Pastor Ed is in First Corinthians twelve, and lately underscoring the manifestations of the spirit.  Today it’s the word of knowledge that we’ll be talking about, and how God wants to use it in your life as you’re open and willing.  In short it’s a piece of knowledge that comes from God.  It could be to protect you, or something He wants you to share with someone.

You may feel as though your family is a real mess or dysfunctional.  That’s the story for many of us, and it certainly was the case for the family we’ll hear about today on Abounding Grace.  This family fell apart, and it all started with deceit and favoritism.  Pastor Ed Taylor opens Genesis chapter 27 today.  The family I’m referring to is Isaac and Rebekah’s.

Think your family is dysfunctional?  Well as the old saying goes, “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”   Isaac’s family was dysfunctional in so many ways.  There was a lack of trust and leadership, and it would lead to broken relationships.  It’s a family gone wrong, and reminds us that deceit destroys families.

“You remind me of your father!”  Have you ever had someone say that to you?  More often than not it’s meant to be a compliment.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll discover that children often follow in their father’s footsteps.  And sometimes those footsteps lead to trouble and heartache. And other times to blessing!  We’ll be finishing up Genesis chapter 26 today with pastor Ed Taylor.  It’s here that we see Isaac repeat the sins of his father!

Without a doubt our fathers have a great influence on our lives… for good or bad.  And very often a child will end up doing the very same things their dad did.  Thus the saying, “Like father like son!”  We’ll see this play out right before our eyes today on Abounding Grace as we turn to Genesis chapter 26.   We’re going to be studying Isaac’s life and as you’ll see in a moment, it resembles his dad’s life in many ways.

As soon as you receive Christ, the war is on!  It’s a spiritual battle between the flesh and the spirit.  But is there a way to experience victory in the battle?  I’m happy to say there is, and here’s a little hint, what you feed has a lot to do with what will come out on top.
