Abounding Grace

Pastor Ed Taylor

It's Time to Go Back to Bethel Part 1

June 6, 2024

We’ll be continuing pastor Ed Taylor’s study of Genesis, and we’ve reached chapter 31.  We’ve been studying the life and times of Jacob.  Recently we’ve learned about Jacob’s love life and then his home life.  At this point Jacob isn’t where he needs to be, and so God is about to stir things up. And haven’t you found that to be true in your life?  You’ve strayed a bit, and the Lord stirs the nest to get you where He wants you.

Is your home life a big mess and you’re hoping for a turnaround?  Well keep it right here for Abounding Grace, as we visit Genesis chapter thirty and hear all about Jacob’s home Life.  It too was messy, and fractured, to say the least.  But even still God was at work through it all, and by His grace accomplished great things.

A fractured family or family in crisis… that would describe a good number of homes today.  It’s a rarity for kids to be living under the same roof as Mom and Dad, with divorce as common as it is.  And maybe that’s something you can relate to!   As we turn to Genesis chapter 30 today on Abounding Grace we’ll give attention to Jacob’s home life, and it’s a real mess.  Pastor Ed Taylor will talk about that, but we’ll also observe God’s grace shining through it all!

Whether we’re serving in the nursery at church, or going on a short-term missions trip, or serving meals to the homeless, it’s a good idea to ask why are we doing it?   Some do even good things, with the wrong motivations.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll hear why love should be the motivator, just as it was for Jacob in his pursuit of Rachel.

This weekend Ed Taylor continues a series in First Corinthians.  Lately we’ve been exploring what the Bible has to say about the Manifestations of the Spirit.  And today we focus on faith.  As we’ll learn in a moment, there are many different types of faith that the Bible speaks of.

Do you enjoy a good love story?  We’ve got a good one for you in Genesis chapter 29.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll take a look at Jacob’s love life.  And it’s interesting to note the very large commitment that he displayed in order to marry Rachel.  It’s a good reminder to us of the commitment needed to the Lord and our spouse, as we enter into a marriage.

Right now we’re in Genesis chapter 28, and for the next 8 chapters the focus will be on Jacob.  Up until now we’ve seen Jacob up to no good, but God got a hold of his life.  And we begin to hear of his transformation and really the saving of Jacob in this chapter.

We enter Genesis chapter 28 today and the focus is on Jacob.  If you’ll recall, he had just deceived his father into receiving the blessing.  Yes Jacob was a conniver, a heal catcher.  But God would change his life, and he would be governed by God.  We’ll hear all about this transformation which should encourage us all in light of our sin-stained past.

In Genesis chapter 27 we find a family in disarray.  Their rebellion will make life very hard for them, and it all started with doing the right thing the wrong way!   It would lead to a man being deceived by the people he trusted the most.  And a son who is angry and bitter over what had happened.  Let’s be encouraged to always do the right thing the right way as we join pastor Ed Taylor.

We see examples all over the Bible that we can learn a great deal from.  Some good and some bad!   And in Genesis chapter 27 we receive some strong warnings through examples.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll learn that God’s will must be done God’s way.  We’ll hear of a family that didn’t do that, and paid the price.  If we’re wise we’ll learn from their example.

Pastor Ed is in First Corinthians twelve, and lately underscoring the manifestations of the spirit.  Today it’s the word of knowledge that we’ll be talking about, and how God wants to use it in your life as you’re open and willing.  In short it’s a piece of knowledge that comes from God.  It could be to protect you, or something He wants you to share with someone.
