The Power of Encouragement Part 1

June 28, 2024

When you’re hit with the news that there’s no longer a place for you at work, or maybe the church you attend is under great spiritual attack… it’s about that time we can become discouraged and afraid.  Did you know that even prophets like Elijah, and apostles like Paul even dealt with discouragement?   And God has an answer!  We’ll take a look at it today on a Daily Walk.  We enter Acts eighteen where we read about a time in Paul’s life when he was fearful and discouraged.  And maybe that’s where you’re at today?

Our special offer right now is Fan the Flame by Jim Cymbala and John Blattner.   Jim Cymbala is a New York Times best-selling author and long time pastor.  Through the years he’s observed a pressing need for back-to-the-basics spiritual leadership among Christians.  And he’s also seen so many churches come to defeat because many leaders forget this one truth: Your church is not your church.  It’s Christ’s church.  And in order for His church to flourish, we have to minister His way.

We’re going to resume pastor John Randall’s study of Acts, as we look at chapter seventeen once again.  The scene shifts to Athens today.  As Paul the apostle looks around, he sees the city full of idols, and so he begins presenting just what they needed to hear... the Gospel message!  And the Lord gives us many opportunities to do the same if we’re open and willing.  Let’s be encouraged together to believe and then share the Gospel.

Throughout the day we talk about the weather, how our day is going, our interests and maybe even current events.  But today on a Daily Walk pastor John Randall will encourage us to talk about the greatest news of all. And if you’re like a lot of believers you really struggle in this area of personal evangelism.  So this is much needed encouragement from Acts chapter seventeen today.

I probably don’t have to convince you this world is messed up and upside down due to sin.  We’re reminded of that virtually every time we turn on the news.  What can turn things around you may be wondering?  Today on a Daily Walk that’s answered for us through a study of Acts seventeen.

Today we’ll resume our study in Acts with a look at chapter seventeen, and how the ministry of Paul and Barnabas and friends was literally turning the world upside down!  I think you’d agree that really needs to happen in our world today!  Would you like to be one who turns the world upside down for Jesus? Pastor John will explain how that can happen and it starts with a dependence upon the work and power of the Spirit of God!

We’re in Matthew chapter 9 verses 27- 38 this weekend.  Nothing can compare to the grief that follows the death of a child.  It’s a parent’s worst nightmare.  Or imagine being blind or demon possessed!  That’s the reality for the people we’ll encounter in today’s passage.  And when they met Jesus everything changed, in a good way!  Whatever you’re facing today, allow this study to encourage you to take it to Jesus in faith.

If you were beaten with rods, and thrown in prison for doing what God told you to do, how do you think you’d respond?  If you’re like most, you might be angry or even turn bitter.  Then complain about it on social media.  But not Paul and Silas.  We’re told they prayed and praised. God gave them a song in the night.  And He can do the same for us as we suffer for the name of Christ. Today on a Daily Walk we’re looking at Acts sixteen.

No doubt you’ve had this happen to you… you’re absolutely confident God has called you to accept a job, or move somewhere, or begin a ministry… and then suddenly the door slams shut and you no longer have a peace about it.  The Lord then changes your direction and you’re left wondering what’s up!  Did you really hear God correctly? Maybe you grow discouraged?  Sound familiar?  Today we’ll learn from the apostle Paul’s experience recorded for us in Acts sixteen. So how will you handle it next time it happens to you?

We’re at the midway point of our journey through Acts, here on a Daily Walk!  We’ll join pastor John Randall in chapter fifteen today.  And at this point in the early church there’s conflict and controversy. Paul and Barnabas have been doing the Lord’s work, sharing the salvation message.  But now they’re facing opposition within their own ranks.  We’re about to learn how to handle conflicts like these, when they arise in our Daily Walk!

Whether it’s at the office, in school, at home or even in church… we’ll face opposition and hardship.  That’s usually a sign we’re on the right track.  The enemy opposes the work of the Lord, and so if we’re doing what God wants us to do… we’ll be opposed at some point in time.  So how do we persevere?  That’s the question we’ll present today on a Daily Walk. Today pastor John Randall continues our series through the book of Acts.  In chapter fourteen we discover how to persevere in the midst of opposition just as Paul and Barnabus did in their missionary journey.
