Rest in the Lord Part 1

August 17, 2024

The Pharisees were obsessed with catching Jesus in the act of breaking their rules and traditions. But, in actuality, their laws often cut against the grain of the Scriptures, and Jesus conveyed this to them in such clever ways that they were usually left scratching their heads! Today on A Daily Walk, we’ll take a look at an instance in Matthew Twelve where the Pharisees caught Jesus and His disciples breaking one of their rules. How did Jesus react? Let’s find out together.

Pleasing God
This month we’d like to make special mention of an excellent book written by Kay Smith titled, “Pleasing God.”  We face choices every day, and we hope it’s your desire to please God as you go about making those decisions. In Pleasing God, Kay Smith encourages women to think of God first and to live with His pleasure in mind!

There are a large number of people today that are under the illusion that they can gain a right standing with God through their good behavior.  Ask them a question like, “Are you going to heaven when you die?”  And they might say something like, “I think so, I’m a pretty good person.”  Today we open our Bibles to Romans chapter four, and find the truth about our salvation.   We’re all made righteous through trusting in Christ alone, and not by anything we have done.

One of the most fascinating and well-known persons in the Bible is Abraham. Yes he lived long ago but his story still speaks to us today, providing great encouragement to trust in Jesus alone for salvation.  In Romans chapter four the argument for salvation by grace through faith is made by using the historical account of Abraham. Pastor John Randall will explore this liberating truth of how God not only saved Abraham by faith apart from works but really all of us!

We’ll join pastor John Randall in Romans chapter three on this Wednesday.  Today we’re going to unwrap the beautiful doctrine of salvation.  We’re guilty sinners, with no way to become righteous on our own.  But God provided a solution to our sin problem.  While being Just, He at the same time justifies the guilty sinner through the work of Jesus on the cross.

Pastor John Randall is taking us through Romans one verse at a time, and we visit chapter three once again today.  Verses 21-31 beautifully describe the doctrine of salvation.  We’ve learned previously that it’s impossible for us to live up to the standard of the law.  We’re all sinners, and can’t possibly earn our way into heaven.  So where does that leave us?  Is there any hope?  I’m glad to say there is, in Jesus.  And Romans makes that clear.

Some of you are old enough to remember the hymn that proclaims. “All to Him I owe - sin has left a crimson stain He washes white as snow.” I suspect the writer of that familiar verse could have received some inspiration from Romans chapter three - the passage in front of us today.  And for some inspiration of our own let’s join Pastor John Randall as he focuses on the depravity of man, and the answer to our sin problem.

We pick up today in Matthew, chapter eleven. People everywhere are growing weary and burdened as they look at the problems in the world and in their life. Many are looking for relief.  The good news is we can find rest and salvation in Jesus. How do we know this? Jesus said so Himself. Let’s head on over to Matthew Eleven as we join pastor John for A Daily Walk.

Today we begin Romans chapter three which reveals the total depravity of man! And our great need for Jesus and God’s grace.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul was adamant about our position in Christ - that we are saved by grace and grace alone. He declared that our status here on earth has absolutely no bearing on our position in heaven. This was a hard lesson for the Jews to grasp, as they were taught to regard their status as higher than the lowly Gentiles around them.  Grab that Bible of yours and open it up to Romans chapter two and follow along with us as John Randall shows us that nothing can save us apart from Christ.

The law is much like a mirror- it can only show us our sin- it can’t cleanse us of it.  Yet too many seek to live under the law expecting they can perform it.  That only leads to hypocrisy and judgmentalism. There’s a better way - a way that actually works!  Today on a Daily Walk we take you to Romans chapter two and see together what that is.

Maybe you’ve noticed, we’re pretty good at making excuses to justify our bad behavior.  But we’re all too quick to come down hard on others who do the very same thing. This sort of self-deception and self-righteousness was present in the heart of the people we’ll read about today in Romans chapter two.
